19.30-20.30: Set worship free. Lecture with theatrical director Per Smedegaard and pastor Christina Laursen.

20.30-21.30: Common discussion of evangelical worship today.

Based in the previous lecture on the event ”Befri gudstjenesten”, a conversation will be facilitated emphasizing the characteristics of evangelical worship today.

Wednesday 15 November 2017

8.30-9.00 Morning worship in Vor Frue Kirke, Frue Kirkeplads.

9.15-10: Keynote with Sturla J. Stålsett, Oslo

Why music matters for spiritual (and non-spiritual) activities

While not having any obvious survival value, music can be regarded as a basic phenomenon that accompanies human species since its origin. Music is present in all phases of human life: newborn babies are calmed down by soothing tunes, adolescents nurture their self-identity through music idols and preferences, adults carefully chose music for wedding ceremony, and in the old age music comforts and accompanies towards the last voyage, to name but a few. This wide-ranging impact of music extends to neuroscience-based therapeutic applications, such as stroke, schizophrenia, autism, and depression. Overall, a considerable body of empirical research, investigating the benefits of music on health and wellbeing, has begun to emerge. But why has music such a deep impact on our emotional and even spiritual life? What are the biological determinants of music emotions? Why are some people touched by music more than others? In this talk, I present the recent neuroscience findings revealing the brain functions enabling us, and some individuals more than others, to be emotionally touched by music. Moreover, I will discuss the psychological and neural mechanisms underlying the affiliative and social-bonding functions of music. By doing so, I will put forward an evidence-based account for music’s role in human activities.
